Abbreviations

The rules for abbreviations in academic writing are simple.

1. Spell out words, except standard abbreviations, in formal writing.

Wrong: We will meet Sue & Doc. John in the SUB at 6 on Fri.

Right: We will meet Sue and Dr. John in the Student Union

Building at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
